Levocarnitine is a aminoacid derivate, Chemically, levocarnitine is the L-isomer of carnitine
Levocarnitine is an essential co-factor for the metabolism of fatty acids. It's an endogenous compound, synthesized from lysine and methionine, but also provided by food. Most (95%) of the levocarnitine in the body is present in heart and skeletal muscle. Signs of systemic deficiencies are acute episodes of encephalopathy, cardiomyopathy, muscle weakness and accumulation of lipid. Deficiency becomes obvious in the first years of life and can arise from eiher a failure of hepatic synthesis or a failure of transport from liver into muscles
