OSU Names Helen Diggs as Director of Veterinary Teaching Hospital

Helen Diggs, a nationally recognized leader in veterinary medicine and animal welfare, has been named director of the Lois Bates Acheson Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Oregon State University. Diggs, who also will serve as associate dean of OSU's College of Veterinary Medicine, will begin her new duties on Feb. 1 (2009).

OSU Receives Gates Foundation Grant of Nearly $1M for Tuberculosis Research

Oregon State University biomedical researcher Luiz Bermudez, M.D., has received a grant of nearly $1 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to study a potential new treatment for tuberculosis, a contagious disease that afflicts approximately one third of the world's population.

Agricultural Research Foundation Funds 33 OSU Projects

The Agricultural Research Foundation of Oregon has announced grants totaling $373,760 for projects in agriculture, pharmacy and veterinary medicine at Oregon State University.

Hall Wins USDA/CREES Grant

A new study done with mice has discovered that supplements of lipoic acid can inhibit formation of arterial lesions, lower triglycerides and reduce blood vessel inflammation and weight gain - all key issues for addressing cardiovascular disease.

Research Breakthrough Uses Nanotechnology to Target Cancer Tumors

An Oregon State University-led research team has successfully used nanotechnology to deliver diagnostic imaging agents to cancerous tumors. The specially designed "peptide" (or compound comprised of amino acids) attaches directly to cancer cells in animals by targeting the tumors' low pH levels. "Treatment for breast cancer and other cancers often takes what is commonly called the 'cut, poison and burn' approach," said John Mata, a senior research assistant professor of biomedicine in OSU's College of Veterinary Medicine and lead author on the study.

What scientists used to believe was an innocuous parasitic organism is now being blamed by some for causing a growing number of severe gastrointestinal disorders in the mid-Willamette Valley. OSU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory is unique in Oregon
